May 30, 2021 4 min read

If you love drinks with a pop of flavor, then this margarita recipe is the one for you. Created nearly 90 years ago, this Mexican favorite started with just a few ingredients - lime juice, tequila, and salt - and has been adapted by many over the years to include different juices, spices, and flavorings. Multo®’s recipe has done just that, adding fresh cucumber and spicy jalapeños to the classic margarita recipe for a refreshing cocktail with a kick of flavor. Spice up your summer or Mexican-inspired meal by making this frozen beverage and sip your taste buds into happiness.

How to make cucumber jalapeño frozen margaritas with Multo® by CookingPal®?

Cucumber Jalapeno Frozen Margarita

1. Freeze cucumber.

The first step in making this margarita recipe is to slice and freeze two cucumbers. Prepare the cucumbers by peeling off the skin and removing the seeds. These parts will not blend fully when making the drink and they could add bitterness to the fresh cucumber taste, so it is best to discard them during the preparation. At this point, you can dice the cucumber into tiny 1” chunks.

When freezing cucumbers, you want to make sure that the pieces are not tightly packed together as it is more difficult to mix large chunks of icy ingredients. The best way to freeze the cucumbers without having them stick together is to place the pieces on a parchment paper-lined cookie sheet or pan and spread them out in one layer, trying to leave space between each cucumber chunk. Then place the pan into the freezer, without a cover, and after 4 hours the pieces should be at the perfect consistency.

Should you want to prepare the frozen cucumber pieces ahead of time, freeze the cucumber pieces and then move them to a freezer-safe container or plastic bag. Frozen cucumbers can stay fresh in the freezer for up to six months.

If you do not have time to freeze the cucumbers for this recipe, you can add ice cubes into Multo® and blend the ingredients together. This will add extra liquid to your beverage but can help if you are pinched for time.

2. Preparation before blending.

Begin by gathering and preparing the ingredients needed to make these margaritas.

First, select the tequila that you will use in the recipe. When selecting tequila, check to see if the bottle says 100% de agaveor puro de agave. This means the liquor is distilled from pure agave and does not have artificial sugars. As long as the bottle says this, the rest of the decision can be made by personal preference, but keep in mind that some tequilas (e.g. añejo tequilas) have a darker color than others (blanco tequilas) while others (e.g. mezcal tequilas) have a smoky taste. Some of these factors may slightly alter the final look and taste of this drink, but they will all be delicious!

Second, you will have to prepare the jalapeño pepper for use. This recipe suggests you remove the seeds from the pepper to reduce its spiciness, but you can choose to leave the seeds in depending on your spice preference. Be sure to wash your hands immediately after handling these peppers to avoid getting the spice in your eyes or other surfaces (it can cause serious reactions).

things you need to salt the rim

Finally, margarita recipes typically call for salting the rim of the glass it is served in. Not only does this make for a beautiful presentation of the drink, but it also is known to intensify the sweet and salty flavors of the beverage. Salting the rim is also seen with other drinks that have citrus ingredients to balance the citrus-sourness.

3. Blend and enjoy!

Once your ingredients have been properly prepared, it is time to blend them together! Blend the frozen cucumbers, sugar, and lime juice, and then add ingredients until your margarita is mixed to a smooth consistency. Pour into your salted-rim glass and garnish with a fresh lime slice or jalapeño slice.

Should you have extra margarita mix, you can store it in the freezer for up to a week in a glass container - but they do taste best when enjoyed shortly after making.

Tips and Tricks

  • Why is this drink called a margarita?

Dating back to the 1930s, this popular drink is said to be first made in Mexico by a man named Carlos “Danny” Herrara. He was a restaurant owner who was challenged to make a drink for a dancer named Marjorie King. Since Marjorie only liked tequila, Carlos took the ingredients of a typical tequila shot - tequila, lime juice, and salt - and poured it over ice into a taller beverage. The dancer’s name was the inspiration for the titlemargarita, and over the years ingredients such as sugar, orange liqueur, other citrus juices, and spices have been added to enhance this drink’s flavor, diversity, and popularity.

  • Why is tequila used for margaritas?

There are two big reasons why tequila is used in margaritas. First, it is a Mexican liquor, and this keeps with the Mexican culture and history of the drink. Secondly, tequila - especially the recommended blanco tequilas - have a smooth, subtle flavor that will not overpower the flavors of the other ingredients (lime juice, orange liqueur).

  • Can this recipe be made “virgin”?

This recipe can definitely be made without alcohol. You can substitute an equal amount of tonic water for the tequila and proceed with the recipe as directed. The only real difference you will notice when you drink your virgin margarita is the slight fizz from the tonic water - but who doesn’t love a bubbly cocktail?
